Spielmotor München Festival gGmbH was founded in 1979 as Spielmotor München e.V. to promote art and culture in collaboration with BMW and the City of Munich; as a subsidiary of the City of Munich, it now organises three citywide biennial theatre festivals. Each has its own distinct DNA and yet each is closely linked through the Spielmotor festival platform, which facilitates the necessary knowledge transfer and provides the appropriate infrastructure.
The Munich International Dance Festival, held every two years, has been running since 1987 and brings a varied programme of international performances to different locations and venues across the City of Munich. In so doing, the boundaries between dance, performance and the visual arts from different communities become ever more blurred.

Spielart is a festival that celebrates contemporary forms of theatre from Germany and abroad. Since its inception in 1995 it has been challenging theatre as an art form, constantly re-exploring and redefining it from its margins. In doing so, Spielart forges sustainable relationships with local and international artists and actively promotes the development of emerging practitioners, as well as working towards structural improvements in international theatre production.
